Ontario Auto Insurance: Auto Reform, You Have a Choice

If you own a vehicle in Ontario you are required to have a standard insurance policy in case an accident occurs. Policies include basic coverage like compensation for if your vehicle is damaged or people are injured. A standard policy may not be right for everyone.

As of June 1st, 2016 the Ontario government lowered basic coverage limits. A standard benefit called medical, rehabilitation + attendant care is now reduced to $65,000 for non-catastrophic accidents; these are collisions that cause broken bones and severe strains.

For more serious catastrophic accidents it is reduced to $1,000,000 in coverage. It provides reimbursement for reasonable necessary expenses if you have been injured in an accident. This includes the cost of an attendant if you need help at home or in a health care facility; costs can escalate quickly. Often basic coverage is not enough.
